Monuments
Plaster and cardboard models
October 2018

In the final scene of Le Conseguense Dell’Amore of Paolo Sorrentino, the main character dies on a construction site somewhere in the Alps. The location feels very cold because of the construction machinery and bare soil of the site. The view over the mountains on the other hand, felt serene, calming. Inspired by these two opposing emotions that the enviroment of the scene encapsulated, I decided to imagine two monuments for the main character. One is a large, cold building, in which the human size is taken out of context, above the ground. The other is a monument in a natural environment, a large, black lake surrounded by bare mountains. Because here the human scale is missing, the question arises whether a landscape, without human interference, can also portray an emotion.
